April Barton's Portfolio

"I touch it and its fierce!"

I've been cutting hair for over twenty-five years and I still love it. It’s an "inside job," one of my philosophies on life, and that’s how I cut, from the inside out. Using a distinct style I've created known as “interior shaping,” my cuts last for months and grow in beautifully. I've worked with Bono, Matthew Modine, Jake Gyllenhaal, Adrien Brody, and Willie Nelson, and although most famous for my men’s grooming, I'm equally adept at styling fabulous women such as Bonnie Raitt, Mary J. Blige, and Avril Lavigne. Artists, musicians, actors and TV personalities regularly visit my salon. From the corporate giant to the super’s daughter, I discover my clients’ comfort zones and create something for them that is uniquely their own. Never one to settle for the norm, in 1995 I opened up my own salon, Suite 303, in the Chelsea Hotel, previously home to such legends as

Jimi Hendrix, Leonard Cohen, Sid Vicious, Patty Smith, Janis Joplin, Stanley Kubrick, Arthur Miller and Ethan Hawke. I wanted my clients to feel the incredible creative spirit that lives within the walls of The Chelsea Hotel. It’s part of the whole experience. My work is seen in film, TV, commercials, and music videos. I was featured in the documentary Women on Top. In 2007 I was Chief Hairstylist on TLC’s 10 Years Younger and appeared on Bravo’s reality series Shear Genius. My work has been in top magazines such as Rolling Stone and GQ, working mostly with photographer Mark Seliger. Currently, while the Chelsea Hotel remains closed, Suite 303 still keeps it’s off-beaten-path feel at 7 Bond St, NoHo on the ground floor through Selima Optique.

In early 2004, I decided I wanted a career change that would inevitably, change me. As a stylist at the salon, I’d like to think I add color to Suite 303, literally and figuratively. Cutting and coloring have been such a rewarding art form for me. I’m constantly learning and growing.

April has taught me some of her tricks and I'm discovering a few of my own.

I started cutting hair very young. This fascination led me to my first job with Suite 303 in 2003. In 2007, I took my talents across the East River to Brooklyn, where I found new inspiration in Williamsburg's exploding art and music scene. This increased my appetite for 'street style'. With a laid-back and straightforward approach, I'm back at Suite 303 with a vengeance. With my background in different styles — multi-faceted — I specialize in Rock & Roll , wash & wear hair. April calls me 'mini-me'!

I’ve honed my creativity from painting and drawing. I studied art in Italy and then set my sites on NYC. I later applied my creativity to hair and trained at several well-known hair studios, traveling with the teams to many cities. Four years later I found myself drawn to the magnetic energy of April Barton´s Suite 303. My cuts have a loyal following — specializing in long hair and razor cutting.

Growing up in my mother’s salon inspired me to pursue a career in the beauty industry. I moved to NYC in 2009 and trained with Sassoon academies from Miami to NYC. I now found a home at Suite 303 where I can put my creative skills and talents to work. I cut, color, and specialize in editorial work. I'm also currently an educator for Oribe where I travel, teach, and transform hair with my strong yet subtle approach.

My approach to styling is to examine one’s persona, and reflect it in their image. Each desired look is not to mimic a certain fashion, but to harmonize character with their lifestyle. I'm passionate about coloring as well as styling and cutting. My global travels and continued education in other creative outlets are what inspire me most. In turn, it translates into long-lasting cuts and vibrant earthy colors.
