BACKSTORY

BACKSTORY

suite 303: Nyc’s iconic downtown salon

APRIL BARTON founded Suite 303 in the legendary Chelsea Hotel in 1995, without so much as a sign to lure in outside customers.  Today, Suite 303 continues to thrive on  Bond Street  celebrating its 30th year. Vibrant music fills the space, and its walls are adorned with original works, carefully curated over the years from artists such as Leo Villareal, Renee Ricard, Matthew Ritchie, Robert Lambert... It’s a creative sanctuary, housing visionary stylists who specialize in everything from hair to nails to brows and lashes.

"When I left the ‘salon industry’, I knew I needed to create this exclusive environment in order to grow  as an artist.” April uses and teaches a technique she refers to as interior cutting, sculpting hair from the inside out to create styles that evolve naturally over time.

Suite 303 is the type of place where artists are known to drop by with a piece of artwork, play a musical instrument, or sing a song in exchange for a cut. With a loyal clientele spanning some of the worlds top leader in business, tech, and the arts, her portfolio features Matthew Modine, Malcom Gladwell, Adrien Brody, Jake Gyllenhaal, U2,  Willie Nelson, Elvis Costello, the list goes on. Barton’s work has been showcased in film, television, and top publications such as Rolling Stone, NYT, NY Magazine, Vogue..

To hear the full story, look out for Barton’s debut memoir See You in the Morning, coming Spring 2027 (HarperCollins | Dey Street).
